I did my internship with Gold Bond Building Products. After graduating from CPT I was offered a full time job with Gold Bond Building products. It was a great job as an entry level programmer/analyst. I did not take the job because of the commute. It took me about two hours to get to the office from where I lived and I could not afford to move at the time.
I did however get a job with American Express Health Care System which was only about an hour from my home. I had a friend from my class that did his internship there. The company eventually through a series of buyouts and mergers turned into the job I had with the McKesson Corporation.
I worked for about three years and left to work in a grocery store IT department. It was a better commute to work but not a better job. I only stayed in that job for about a year.
After the grocery store I went to work at a hospital Information Technology department as an interface manager. I had worked with hospital systems at McKesson and thought it would be good to get some experience on the hospital side. The hospital was a good place to work but I went back to work for McKesson after about a year. I worked for McKesson for about eighteen years altogether.
When I went back to work for McKesson they gave me partial credit for some of the three years that I had worked for them previously. That worked out great because I had changed jobs two times my salary was higher when I went back to McKesson.
It has always been my thought that I was pretty lucky to have a job. So I was always willing to work a little harder than most of the people around me. This turned out to be a good policy. I was able to keep my job when many others were laid off. I plan to keep that same attitude as long as I continue to work no matter what the job.
I moved to the Boulder, Colorado to work for McKesson in 1999. I stayed in Colorado for nearly 10 years. My mom passed away in 2008 and decided to move back to the East Coast to be near my family. In 2009 I moved to North Myrtle Beach, SC because my cousin lives there. I continued to work for McKesson out of my house until 2011. I was starting to hear rumors that McKesson was going to sunset all the applications I worked with so I decided it was time to leave before I got laid off. I thought it would be better to look for a job while I still had a job. I accepted a position with New Hanover Regional Medical Center located in Wilmington, NC in 2012 as the backup/disaster recovery engineer. I like the job and still work for New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
I have been employed continously since I graduated from the Computer Programming Training in 1990 which is something of an accomplishment in itself.
